Essential Skills

As your child enters kindergarten you may want to know some of the things he/she will be learning. Here are some things that will be "essential" for your child to learn this year!

• Recognize and give sounds for each letter in the alphabet
• Orally blend sounds after the teacher segments a word
• When given a word, can provide a rhyming word
• Read basic sight words (For example: I, can, like, me, and, look, we, the, you, see, to, a, is, no, me)
• Learn concepts about print
• Phonemically spell
• Write first and last name
• Write all letters of the alphabet
